For Holger Holthusen of Knappschaft Kliniken, the true breakthrough of artificial intelligence lies in finally being able to use the vast amounts of data collected every day in hospitals – and to use it for the direct benefit of patients.

He stressed that this responsibility does not stop at the hospital door. To build effective clinical decision-support systems, data must be connected across the healthcare continuum: hospitals, health insurers, and general practitioners. Only when these data sources work together can they support clinicians in making better, faster, and more informed decisions.

Holthusen also issued a clear message to policymakers: the regulatory landscape must become simpler and more enabling. Innovation that helps patients should not be slowed down by layers of complexity. A more supportive framework is essential for ensuring that data-driven tools truly reach clinical practice.

As part of the Data2Value Executive Dialogue, Holger Holthusen highlighted a central mission shared across Europe’s health systems: turning data into actionable insights, and insights into better outcomes for patients.

Holger Holthusen is CMO of Knappschaft Kliniken and contributed his perspective on data-driven healthcare transformation during the Data2Value Executive Dialogue.
